The practice tests

The practice tests

What is DMV Exam Pass?

A free practice-test service for the knowledge exams that come before a Driver License, a Motorcycle License, and a CDL, in all 50 states and Washington, DC. Every state has its own questions, written for that state's own official manual, and every answer is explained.

Is this the official DMV test?

No. DMV Exam Pass is an independent study service and is not affiliated with any state agency. The questions are written in the style of the exam to prepare you for it; the official test is taken with your state's licensing agency.

Are the practice tests free?

Yes. Every practice test on the site is free, with no sign-up. An optional account saves your progress across devices.

How many questions are there?

Each state has three banks of 100 questions, one per license, in ten topics of ten. That is 300 questions per state and 15,300 across the country. A test draws from the whole bank, so a weak topic shows up quickly.

How long is a practice test?

You choose. A Quick check of 25 questions takes about ten minutes, a Practice run of 50 about twenty, and the Full challenge of 100 about forty. There is no clock in exam mode, and you can pause any time.

Which states are covered?

All 50 states and Washington, DC, each with the permit, motorcycle, and CDL tests. Start from the states page or pick your state on the home page.

Do the tests include road signs and pictures?

Yes. Questions about signs, signals, pavement markings, and road situations are illustrated, the way the real test presents them. The number varies by state and license and is shown on each state's page.

Can I take a test more than once?

As often as you like. Each test is drawn fresh from the bank, and a second attempt at the same length will not repeat the same set in the same order.

Coaching and exam mode

Coaching and exam mode

What is the difference between coaching mode and exam mode?

Coaching mode shows whether each answer was right, and why, before you move on; it is for learning. Exam mode holds the explanations and the correct choices until the end, the way the real test does, and still shows your running score; it is for checking readiness.

Why does exam mode still show my score?

So you know where you stand without seeing the answers. The sidebar counts correct and wrong as you go; the explanations and the correct choices appear only when the test is complete.

Where do the explanations come from?

Each explanation names the rule the question tests, in plain words, so you can find it in your state's manual. They are written with the question, by the same standard.

Can I pause a test and come back later?

Yes. A test in progress is saved on this device and offered again when you return. With an account it is saved to your account as well, so you can continue on another device.

What score should I aim for?

Aim for 80 percent or better on a Full challenge in exam mode, more than once. The official passing score is set by your state's agency; scoring consistently above 80 here means you are answering from the rules rather than from luck.

States and licenses

States and licenses

Which state should I choose?

The state that will issue your license. Rules differ between states, and each state's bank is written for that state's own manual, so a Texas test will not prepare you for Ohio's questions.

I am moving. Which state's test do I take?

The state you are moving to. Practice with that state's bank; the rules you need are the ones its manual teaches.

What is the difference between the permit test and the motorcycle test?

The permit test is the knowledge exam for a regular Driver License. The motorcycle test covers riding: lane position, braking, cornering, protective gear, and carrying passengers. They are separate banks with separate topics.

What does the CDL practice test cover?

The commercial knowledge test areas: vehicle inspection, control and visibility, speed and space, cargo, air brakes, combination vehicles, doubles and triples with tank vehicles, passenger vehicles, and hazardous materials and school bus safety, as your state's commercial manual presents them.

Is Washington, DC included?

Yes, with its own three banks, like a state.

Accounts and progress

Accounts and progress

Do I need an account?

No. Every test works without one. An account adds a dashboard with your scores, your history, your weakest topics, and the ability to continue an unfinished test on another device.

What does the dashboard show?

Your readiness score across completed tests, every completed test with its score, your weakest topics ranked worst first, and any test you paused. Unfinished tests and completed results can be deleted from the Tests tab.

I did not get the verification email. What should I do?

Check your spam folder for a message from no-reply@dmvexampass.com, then ask for the code again from the sign-in screen. If it still does not arrive, write to support@dmvexampass.com.

What happens to my answers?

Scoring happens on our servers; no answer key is loaded in your browser. A completed test is saved to your account only if you have one. Nothing is sent to any licensing agency.

Accuracy and sources

Accuracy and sources

Where do the questions come from?

Every bank is independently written for one state and one license from that state's current official manual. No manual text is copied; the questions test the rules, in our own words, with the rule explained in the answer.

Are these the real questions from the exam?

No. Nobody outside the agency has the real questions, and we do not use, claim, or advertise leaked or exact exam questions. These are independently written questions that test the same rules, so what you learn transfers to whatever the real test asks.

How are the questions checked?

Every question passes automated checks for its source, its four choices and rationales, duplication against every other bank, mechanical filler, and its illustrations. The checks do not read for meaning, which is why corrections are easy to report. The methodology page describes both.

A question looks wrong. How do I report it?

Email support@dmvexampass.com with the state, the license, and the question text. It is checked against the official manual, and a confirmed error is corrected and recorded on the corrections page.

How often are the questions updated?

When a state publishes a new manual edition and when a correction is confirmed. A change is released as a new version rather than edited silently, so a test you already took is not changed under you.

Pricing

Pricing

What does it cost?

The practice tests are free and stay free. There is nothing to pay to take any test, in any state, in any mode.

What is the Pass Pack?

A paid study bundle for one state, planned as a one-time purchase. Purchases are not open yet; the pricing page will say so until they are, and no card is collected before then.
