Road Closed Ahead Sign: Meaning and What to Do
The orange diamond reading ROAD CLOSED AHEAD warns that the road is closed to traffic a short distance on. It is posted at the last place you can conveniently turn off, so that drivers who do not need to reach an address before the closure can choose another way.
Road Closed Ahead Sign
At the closure itself, a white Road Closed sign on a barricade blocks the road, sometimes with a plaque allowing local traffic to continue to the last open driveway. This advance diamond gives you the choice before you are committed.
What to do when you see the road closed ahead sign
If you can reach your destination another way, turn off now. If you must continue for local access, drive slowly and expect to stop at the barricade; do not drive around it. Watch for a Detour sign, which will usually follow to route through traffic around the closure.
The signs it is confused with
Tests pair it with the white regulatory Road Closed sign at the barricade, which prohibits entry, and with Detour Ahead, which often accompanies it. The orange diamond warns; the white barricade sign forbids.
