Runaway Truck Ramps

A runaway truck ramp is the escape route for brakes that have overheated into failure on a long downgrade. It is a spur of deep gravel or an uphill grade, engineered to absorb a heavy vehicle's momentum when the service brakes no longer can.

How this situation is handled

The rule has two halves. Prevention: descend in a low gear chosen before the grade, letting the engine hold speed so the brakes are used lightly and stay cool. Decision: if the brakes do fade, use the ramp early and without hesitation. It exists for exactly that moment, using it is not a failure, and the alternative at the bottom of the grade is far worse.

The mistake it catches

The tested mistake is riding the service brakes down the grade until they fade, then passing the ramp while hoping the pedal comes back. Brake fade does not recover mid-hill, and the next ramp may be beyond the runout.
