Hydroplaning

Hydroplaning is the tire riding on a film of water instead of the pavement: the tread cannot channel the water away fast enough, the contact patch floats, and steering and braking momentarily stop existing. It starts with speed, standing water, and worn tread, and it can happen well within posted limits.

How this situation is handled

The response is subtraction, not correction: ease off the accelerator smoothly, keep the wheel straight or steer gently in the direction you want to go, and do not brake hard. As the car slows, the tread bites through the film and grip returns. Prevention is the better rule: slow down in rain, avoid pooled water where you can, and keep tires with real tread on the car.

The mistake it catches

The tested mistake is a hard input mid-float, braking or a big steering correction, which turns a straight glide into a spin the instant grip returns. Off the gas, hands quiet, wait for the tires to land.
