Stopping for School Buses

When a school bus stops with red lights flashing and its stop arm out, traffic stops in both directions on an undivided road, and stays stopped until the lights stop and the arm folds, not merely until the door closes. The law protects the crossing, and children cross in front of the bus, from either side, on the assumption that everything on the road is stationary.

How this situation is handled

The one variation between states is the divided-road case: where a physical median or barrier separates the directions, most states excuse oncoming traffic, and each defines the road types differently. The flashing-yellow phase before the stop means the bus is about to stop; slowing then is what makes the full stop unremarkable.

The mistake it catches

The tested mistake is passing the bus from the oncoming direction on an undivided road, or creeping away while the arm is still out. Both are among the most heavily penalized violations in every state.
