The stop sign is the only sign that uses an eight-sided shape, and that is deliberate: it must be recognizable from behind, at night, or when snow covers the face. It commands a complete stop, not a slow roll. The wheels must stop turning before the stop line, and where there is no line, before the crosswalk or the edge of the intersection.
A stop sign also assigns right of way. After stopping, you may proceed only when the intersection is clear and no cross traffic, pedestrian, or cyclist is close enough to be a hazard. Where all approaches have stop signs, the first vehicle to stop goes first, and when two arrive together, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right.

Look left, right, and left again, yield to traffic and pedestrians, and go only when the way is clear. Rolling through at one or two miles per hour is still a violation, and it is one of the most common causes of a failed road test.
Test writers pair the stop sign with the yield sign, which is a triangle and allows you to continue without stopping when the way is clear, and with the Do Not Enter sign, which is also red but prohibits entry entirely rather than commanding a stop. If the question is about shape alone, the octagon always means stop.
